Fairview Park Schools Superintendent Bill Wagner and Schoolboard President Joe Shucofsky were the featured speakers at the September 6, 2018 meeting of the Fairview Park Democratic Club. The “Emergency” Renewal issue on the November 2018 ballot is to support the $2.69M raised for school use in Fairview Park. This renewal will provide a flat dollar amount vs. a millage increase.
Fairview Park Mayor Eileen Patton attended the meeting as did nearly 50 local residents and visitors. Questions surfaced about measures for gun safety provisions at the Fairview Park Schools, and we not only learned about the double door & film filters being provided to the Administrative Offices regarding school visitors, but also about the “active shooter” drill and training system currently in place within our local school system and community. Additional discussion focused on the recently revealed personal property value increases and the likely benefit this will bring to the Fairview Park City Schools budget. We are grateful to Superintendent Wagner and President Joe Shucofsky for their open discussion of all the issues related to the “Emergency Renewal” for 2018! https://www.fairviewparkschools.org
Democratic Candidate for Ohio Treasurer, Rob Richardson, introduced himself to our audience and, due to limited time in his schedule, he plans to return to our October 4th meeting to engage in more discussion of financial issues for Ohio. Other Candidates present during our meeting included Jennifer O’Malley (Juvenile Court Judge) and Cassimir Svigelj (Ohio State Representative for 16th District).
Voters can hear more from Cassimir Svigelj at the upcoming League of Women Voters Candidate Forum on Tuesday, September 25th from 7-9 p.m. at the Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road, Westlake, Ohio 44145. https://www.cassimirforohio.com
Communications Officer Judy Meinert invited Club members to take Action Steps by volunteering for a two hour shift for phone banking and/or weekend canvassing activities by contacting President Troy Greenfield (313-350-1558). She also invited the audience to write postcard messages to Senator Sherrod Brown and/or Senator Rob Portman, encouraging them to “Vote NO” on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination. Anyone interested was directed to sign the Petition presented by Ohio Families for Change (OFFC) supporting the Marijuana Rights and Regulations ballot issue intended to go before Ohio voters in 2019.
President Troy Greenfield reported that the Nominating Committee is seeking members willing to be considered for Club Officer roles. The Committee will present a slate of Officers in October and we will vote for Club Officers for 2018-2020 at our November meeting. Judy Meinert presented the Treasury Report, conducted the 50/50 Raffle, and reminded everyone that back Dues for 2018 and Club Dues for 2019 are now being accepted.
Our next club meeting is Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Dunson Room at Fairview Park City Hall. Senator Michael J. Skindell is our featured speaker about the Ohio Statehouse Update and his own Campaign for Ohio State Representative. Rob Richardson and other Candidates for the November 2018 ballot will also be present.
