2019 Scholarship Winner – Fairview Park Democratic Club

2019 Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Emma Mitchem, the 2019 Fairview Park Democratic club Scholarship Winner!!

Activism consists of efforts to promote, impede, direct, or intervene in social, political, economic, or environmental reform with the desire to make changes in society. Please give an example of how you are an activist.

I would like to keep volunteering with the Special Stars and would like to help them find a building to call their own to hold their events at. This would also open up the door for other activities they could do such as their own theatre group. As a person who believes in full equality of every race, gender, sexuality, etc. I believe mankind is everyone’s business. Since 2017, I have been emailing our states congressmen expressing my concerns with issues that will not even affect me, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA is an immigration option for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States before the age of 16. But I know it affects millions of people, so I stepped in. It may only start with one email, but if everyone would make it their business, that one email would be millions. This is a prime example of why mankind is everyone’s business. In AP English last year, our teacher said if you don’t like what’s happening, then do something about it. It was a full class discussion about what should be done and how can we make a difference. We agreed, to start that we should write our congressman. About a month later, the same discussion came up and our teacher asked, who did something about it. I heard “we can’t make a difference, we are not 18, they won’t care”. I rose my hand and I said, I wrote to my congressman, I can make a difference, we are the future voters and if they don’t know how we feel, then how can we make this world any better. We need to educate not only ourselves, but each other. I didn’t write an email blindly, I did research, I looked at statistics. If you want to make a difference in your school, your community, your state or country, you need to make sure your voice is heard. Without everyone stepping up and stepping in, there would be no positive outcomes to change our world to a better place to live today and in the future. We need to be conscious of our world around us.
