On September 7, 2017 the Fairview Park Democratic Club resumed monthly meetings at the Dunson Room of Fairview Park City Hall. Participants were met by Mitzie Bugie and Twyla Sales who provided Hospitality and the “Sign-In,” while our Club Treasurer Rod Reilly accepted membership applications and dues payments from new and renewing members. Twenty-six Proud Democrats attended the meeting begun by President Troy Greenfield with the Pledge of Allegiance and a hearty “Welcome Back!”
Vice-President Gail Nanowsky provided a summary of Club members participating in “Summerfest 2017,” announced the yield of $222 from our Prize Raffles, and the
unfortunate destruction of our Booth Tent frame during a powerful storm that “rocked the Booth” on Friday night. Seven people joined the Club during Summerfest 2017!
Four of our current Precinct Leaders were in attendance, namely, Bill McGinty, Amy Hook, Gail Nanowsky, and Troy Greenfield. While we currently have 6 Precinct Lea
er. Our City Leader and Precinct Leaders will play an important role in preparing our citizens for the upcoming elections in 2018.
ders, Troy extended an invitation for members to consider taking on the role of Precinct Leader. We have seven openings at this time. Peg Cleary also accepted the nomination for City Leader, as Danielle Sundburg has stepped down from this role. On September 20, 2017, a representative from the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party will come to witness the election of our next City Lead
Shontel Brown, newly elected Interim Chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, has asked Troy Greenfield to serve as a Vice-Chair during her Administration. We congratulate Troy on accepting this new volunteer role with the Democratic Party!
Jan Hoeffler , Political Action Chair, provided us a brief summary of Donald Trump’s “ACCOMPLISHMENTS” during the past eight months, namely: he won nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court, signed 42 bills into law (15 reversing Obama regulations, 14 ceremonial and routine lawmaking bills, 5 bureaucratic tweaks, 4 Space and Science bills, and 4 Veteran bills). Trump has reportedly also added 49 for-profit businesses to his empire! He raised the Debt Ceiling and FEMA funding is approved for emergency relief from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Rob Hoeffler reminded us that Resistance efforts helped to prevent the #1 Trump promise to overthrow of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Rob also reminded us that Trump’s Campaign antics have provided full employment for Robert Mueller’s team investigating the Russia “connections” to our 2016 elections! Of course, we celebrated OUR actions via calls, visits, letters-to-the-editor, protests and emails to our Members of Congress to rescind the DACA shut-down, to condemn the rejection of Trangender members in our Military, to continue supporting Democratic values in their deliberations and voting, to oppose “The Wall,” to establish Fair Voting Districts, and to oppose White Supremacy, Nationalism, and Neo-Nazis. Rob reminded us of how busy we’ve been!
The Welcome Blanket Project was introduced as an alternative activist approach to consider. (See earlier website post on this project.) Contact Jan Hoeffler with any questions. Troy Greenfield & Judy Meinert reminded all of the upcoming “Welcome Home, Fairview Park” event on September 20th (see earlier website post on this event), and of the September 23, 2017 Lakewood Democrats Picnic from Noon-2pm.
Rod Reilly gave the Treasurer’s Report and conducted the 50/50 Raffle. We were grateful for no expenses during August 2017!
Troy announced Gubernatorial Candidate Joe Schiavoni as our guest speaker for the October 5, 2017 meeting. We will also try to inform the members of any additional Gubernatorial Candidate visits in neighboring Democratic Clubs. All members present were given a copy of the Fairview Park Democratic Club Postcard and are encouraged to write a note and mail it to someone you’d like to consider joining us at future Club meetings! See you again at our next meeting on October 5th!
